Arthritis can affect any part of the human body, including the spine. The most common cause of spinal arthritis is the natural aging process; therefore, the disease is more prevalent in persons over the age of 40. Women are more likely to suffer from this than men, as are overweight individuals. Treatment is usually noninvasive, and may be as simple as medication and exercise.

Symptoms of this type of arthritis are intermittent back pain, spinal stiffness after activity, pain or tenderness in the neck, difficulty bending or standing and weakness in the arms or legs. The back pain exhibited in spinal arthritis is usually relieved by lying down.

Diagnosis requires a through medical history and physical exam, and may require one or more medical tests. The physician may ask the patient to perform several simple exercises to assess range of motion and degree of tenderness. Symptoms are similar to other, more serious spinal disorders, therefore, blood tests may be ordered to rule out these conditions. X-rays, CT scans or MRIs may also be ordered to evaluate the degree of impairment.

While there is no cure for arthritis, there are many treatments available. Therapy may include medications, both over the counter and, in some cases, prescription. Physical therapy, heat/cold therapy and exercise have been shown to be very effective in relieving the pain associated with spinal arthritis. Stimulating blood flow through massage therapy or soaking in a hot tub may also prove helpful.

Studies have shown that some type of arthritis affects approximately 80% of people over the age of 55 in the Unites States. Spinal arthritis is just one type, and affects many people over the age of 40. Back, neck, and shoulder pain are the most common symptoms and can vary in severity and frequency. Common treatments are usually simple and may involve over the counter medications and an exercise routine that will allow the patient to function normally.

Arthritis is a part of life for many, more so for older people. The best thing to do is see your doctor. Follow through with what he instructs of you. Let your family help too. You can live a regular life.

If you or someone you know is experienceing signs or symptoms of spinal arthritis, it would serve you best to visit the Disc Institute of San Diego’s website to gain more information on effective treatment options.

If you sometimes wake up with minor tingling in your arms or legs, it’s probably not a serious health concern but rather a sign that you slept in a awkward pose. However, frequent neurological pain in arms and legs is likely a symptom of serious conditions such as herniated disks, thoracic outlet syndrome, stiff joints, lumbar facet syndrome, and sacroiliac joint pain.

Thoracic outlet syndrome, also known as TOS, is actually a group of disorders involving the compression of the internal cavity known as the superior thoracic outlet. These problems affect the nerves that pass from the neck into arms known as the brachial plexus and blood vessels that pass between your upper extremity and chest known as the subclavian artery and subclavian vein.

TOS is either static and caused by enlargement of muscles surrounding the arteries, veins, and the brachial plexus or it may be positional and caused by movement of the shoulder girdle and collarbone.

There are three types of thoracic outlet syndrome. Neurogenic TOS makes up about 95% of all cases and is the result of compression of the brachial plexus. TOS that results from the compression of the subclavian artery is referred to as arterial TOS. Venous TOS is caused by compression of the subclavian vein. Certain athletes, computer users, neck injury victims and some types of musician are the people most likely to suffer from thoracic outlet syndrome.

Treatments include nerve gliding, stretching, ice and heat, and posture. Extreme problems require treatments such as Botox and cortisone. Stiff joints can indicate a variety of serious conditions such as overuse injuries, infections, Ankylosing spondylitis, and both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

A spinal disk herniation or slipped disk is a tear in the fibrous outer ring of one of the disks between the vertebrae. A tear in the disk causes pain by releasing inflammatory chemicals. They are caused by general wear and tear or through traumatic injury from improper movement while lifting heavy objects such as bending and lifting with the back rather than the legs. Damage to a cervical disk affect the neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Lumbar disk problems can affect the buttocks, thighs, feet and toes. Treatments for herniated disks include NSAID pain relievers, physical therapy, cortisone injections and surgery.

Lumbar facet syndrome is caused when the joints that provide stability in the lumbar region of the spine are injured, irritated or begin to degenerate. It can be treated with chiropractic spinal adjustments, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), anesthetics, and endurance training.

The sacroiliac joint is between the large, wedge shaped bone at base of the spine known as the sacrum and upper section of the pelvis known as the ilium. The sacroiliac joint connects the two bones. Pain in this region is caused by inflammation of the sacroiliac joint called sacroiliitis. Symptoms affect the lower back, buttocks or thighs. It is typically found on one side, can become worse while performing activities such as moving from sitting to standing, may be present during intercourse and may be mistaken for sciatica caused by a herniated lumbar disk. Sacroiliac joint pain is typically treated by spinal manipulation or stabilization.

Occasional tingling in the arms or legs is not a serious problem. However, long term pain may be an indicator of a more serious ailment that should be treated as soon as possible. While not life threatening many of these conditions can cause serious degradation to the quality of life.

If you or someone you know is suffering from neurological pain in the arms and/or legs, it would be beneficial to visit the Disc Institute of San Diego’s website in order to gain more knowledge about the condition and alternative treatment options.

Back and neck pain are a fairly common issue today. This can be due to many reasons. One of the main causes of this pain is an ailment known as bulging discs. If you or someone close to you is experiencing back pain, or have been diagnosed with bulging discs, it might be worth the time to educate yourself about the condition.

A bulging disc is an issue of the spinal region, one in which the spinal disc is altered beyond its normal position. This disc is the soft, thin cushion that rests between the vertebrae, or the bones of the spine. There are a variety of causes and symptoms of this condition, as well as numerous ways to treat it.

Symptoms of this issue can manifest in a variety of ways, all differing from person to person. These symptoms will vary depending on the severity of the issue, and the location of the bulge. Typical symptoms include different degrees of pain and discomfort, as well as a tingling or numb feeling. These problems can range from merely uncomfortable, to debilitating.

There are numerous potential causes for this ailment. The most common culprit of the issue is the aging process, through which the spinal area naturally degrades and weakens. Other common causes include injuries or spinal trauma, poor posture and utilizing improper lifting techniques, and genetics.

There are numerous treatment options available, depending on what your doctor feels is the correct method of treatment. One standard and effective method is epidural injections that can relieve symptoms. Other forms of relief come in the form of physical therapy, medication, surgery, or activity modification.

Back pain is a fairly common problem that affects many people’s daily life. One of the most common causes of this pain is bulging discs. There are, however, a variety of methods that can be utilized to treat the problem. Speak with a doctor and discuss possible solutions.

If you or someone you know has a bulging disc, it would be beneficial to visit the Disc Institute of San Diego’s website to learn more about the condition and its treatment options.

Studies have made it clear that chiropractic care for the treatment of headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, leg, feet and arm disorders – as well as back pain – is very effective. The goal of a Chiropractor is to restore the affected system to a normal state. There are many techniques used to accomplish this. Everything a Chiropractor practices is completely natural.

Nerve, skeletal and muscle disorders can cause a number of different kinds of pain. Such pain may cause inflammation, muscle-spasms or the inability to move about easily. Prescriptions or common painkillers are often the means by which people suffering from such ailments treat their pain. Drugs can be expensive. Chiropractors can treat and end the pain with no further need for drugs and spent-money.

Daniel David Palmer founded Chiropractic in Iowa at the end of the nineteenth century. Many medical professionals condemned and fought against the right to practice this treatment. It was only in the last few decades that scientific evidence – along with satisfied patients – proved the efficacy of chiropractic medicine. Where drugs were the only option, chiropractic is now often the only answer to actually curing common pain. Many parts of the world now recognize Chiropractors as doctors.

The fact that Chiropractors are now as much doctors as dentists and family practitioners, should ease anyone’s concerns about attending a clinic. The only question that should now arise in the minds of a patient is; “What can a Chiropractor cure?” The key word here is “cure”. Often times you will read that something will “relieve” or “calm” your pain or condition. Relieving and calming are usually not curing results. If you are suffering from ongoing or debilitating pain, you will want to end it permanently. Chiropractic can do this.

Among the more common problems Chiropractors treat are low back pain and migraine or tension headaches. Whiplash injuries from a car accident can cause such pain. Although not the only cause of neck and back pain, whiplash is a sudden occurrence that can disable – or cause pain in – a victim for years to follow. Such an injury should be treated promptly.

A patient with lower back pain may also experience numbness or aching in the legs. Waking-up stiff, hip pain and the inability to move freely are other ailments associated with back pain. Joint inflammation, tense muscles, herniated discs and sciatica can cause back pain. It may be that a sufferer of such pain can’t remember any type of severe accident or fall. It is not always necessary to experience extreme trauma to cause back and associated pains.

Migraine headaches can be devastating. Most people who experience them are unable to accomplish the most basic of tasks. Even simply lying down or sleeping can be impossible. Migraines arrive with severe, throbbing pain in the head. They can be so extreme as to make the victim vomit.

Tension headaches are a pain consisting of a constant pressure around the head. These are often less debilitating than migraines, but they can still make it difficult – or impossible for some – to work or perform basic tasks. Both migraines and tension type headaches are caused by some sort of trauma – be it forgotten or extreme. It is usually a nerve, muscle, disc or joint injury to the neck that causes them.

Feet and arm pain might not be considered a reason to visit your Chiropractor. Many people will attend a Chiropractic clinic in order to have the doctor cure their back or neck pain. If you need drugs on a regular basis – or if other treatments have failed, you should seek chiropractic treatment for any and all of these conditions.

Are you dealing with back pain and you think that it is time for some help? The chiropractic may have the solution to help you out. Walkerville Chiropractic has helped many individuals with their pain.

It’s good to learn what the most effective lumbar muscle pain therapy is that will help in providing lasting and short term relief and in the process free you from the ache that is making your back muscles hurt so much. One possible reason why lumbar muscle pain occurs is because you have been maintaining an improper posture. Though there are several other causes for lumbar muscle soreness, an improper pose is a very common cause and it often leads to severe discomfort in the upper as well as lower lumbar.

Don’t Sit In One Position For Too long

If you have been sitting in a single position for extended periods of time this can cause lumbar muscle soreness while other reasons for seeking lumbar muscle pain therapy include suddenly lifting heavy loads, over effort and even stress can become a reason for back muscle pain. If, however, you have been involved in a car accident that resulted in whiplash, this too can lead to back muscle discomfort.

Regardless of the cause of back muscle pain, you will need to makes sure to get the condition treated immediately because it would be wrong to expect that the soreness will subside or go away on its own – because it won’t. Immediate lumbar muscle discomfort therapy is necessary as it can provide relief and also prevent further worsening of the condition.

Back muscle discomfort treatment might also require that you have to take a holistic approach to finding relief and it could even mean undertaking long-term therapy for your lumbar. Other than that, it may also require that you tailor your eating plan so as to get maximum nutritious benefits, and along with discomfort relief therapy and exercises, the eating habits can go a long way in providing very powerful pain relief from back muscle discomfort.

For those who are not suffering from an especially severe case of lumbar muscle discomfort, simple home remedies can prove to be efficient lumbar muscle discomfort treatments which would only require needing to apply ice on the affected parts in order to get relief.

Another form of back muscle soreness therapy is using heat therapy that is especially useful in treating lumbar discomfort. It just requires that you use hot water containers or even towels dipped in hot water. You can apply the hot water bottle or towel for as long as they remain hot. Even massaging the lumbar can prove to be a useful and helpful back muscle soreness treatment method that will help to improve blood circulation and also heat up the area that is experiencing back muscle discomfort.

If you are looking for a back pain alternative therapy, look no further than learning how to maintain the proper pose because more often than not, lumbar pain is actually only caused by holding a poor posture. Even yoga and certain easy exercises can prove to be powerful back muscle pain treatments and they are certainly well worth considering the next time you need to get relief from your lumbar muscle discomfort.

Successful weight loss is not just a matter of losing pounds. The emphasis needs to be on abandoning body fat and avoiding loss of lean body tissue, primarily muscle mass. Why is this the key to long-term success? Because muscle requires 15 times the energy compared to fat to survive (7.5 Calories per day for muscle versus 0.5 calories per day for fat). The more lean tissue, the more calories one can consume once desirable body weight is achieved. Overall, a moderate diet of at least 1000 calories of high quality food per day and exercise is clearly the best approach because 80% of the weight lost is fat. This plan protects lean body mass, which is critical to keep from gaining the weight back again.

Physical exercise in moderation is essential. It burns calories, which promotes body weight reduction. And it makes a body look good, inside and out: the payoff is a leaner, more attractive body, with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. However, physical activity by itself may not be enough to lose body weight. For best results, it should be combined with a reduced caloric overall plan, calculated to match an individual’s new physical activity level.

Rapid weight loss can be encouraging at first, but long term results are disappointing. The lost weight (mostly water) rapidly returns, besides diets too low in calories quickly lower the body’s metabolic rule. This makes it even harder to lose weight and much easier to gain it back, creating a “yo-yo” dieting syndrome. More fat is lost when the rate of weight loss is about 2 pounds per week. The number of calories needed to achieve this varies for each person and should be determined on an individual basis.

There are immediate benefits to consuming the right number of calories. First of all, it helps to avoid the hunger, fatigue and grouchiness that so often accompany deprivation of food. It supplies the energy needed to exercise. Trying to exercise on a very low caloric diet is like starving yourself twice – it leads to further loss of lean body tissue. It helps ensure that nutritional needs are met. This is especially important over an extended period of time.

A healthy mix of foods, high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat, sugar and alcohol gives the individual the most for their calories plus a higher energy level and better nutrition. That’s why it is so important thing to consider is to choose the right foods. Many weight loss diets encourage avoiding carbohydrates (starchy foods), the body’s primary source of fuel. Such diets promote rapid loss of body water for a few weeks. But this can lead to a discouraging weight plateau, followed by weight gain from water and sodium retention once carbohydrates are eaten again.

Lifelong weight control requires more than a simple diet. A plan is needed that focuses on making changes in behaviors that have contributed to the weight problem, changes that are realistic and fit each person’s unique lifestyle. The best weight loss program for most people includes a personal plan of action with specific solutions for lifelong change, a program with the right balance of calories and exercise to lose weight at an optimal rate, and the personal support they need to succeed. Doing it right helps ensure that the weight loss is not just temporary, but long-term.

Lower back pain is one of the most common problems of people, especially adults. Nearly 80 percent of the adults in the world feel back pain. There are different types of lower back pain. The most common form of lower back pain that alarms many people is sciatica.

Sciatica is a form of lower back pain in which the pain spreads down the legs and feet. A lot of people fear sciatica because it is the most painful form among the other lower back pains. Sciatica takes place when people suffer from disc injuries, spinal stenosis, and lower back pain issues.

There are three approaches that must be taken into consideration for the treatment of sciatica.

First is the balancing of the lower back. Sciatica may happen if the lower back joints and muscles are inflamed. Stretches and joint techniques are one of the best means to balance the lower back area. Chiropractic treatment is the best technique to balance the lower back and avoid the occurrence of sciatica.

The second way is to correct the pelvic alignment. The pelvis is the foundation of the spine and is one of the major reasons why people develop sciatica. When the pelvis is distorted, sciatica will most likely happen. Distortion of the pelvis may irritate the sciatic nerve, leading to the development of sciatica.

People may determine if they have a distorted pelvis. It is distorted if the pelvis is twisted, the length of the leg changes or if their pelvis are of different heights. The best solution for this problem is to adjust the pelvis and eliminate the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Only chiropractic therapists can do this type of adjustment. Chiropractic therapy treatment is the best and fastest way to eliminate the pressure on the sciatic nerve and correct the pelvic alignment.

The third way is to perform stretching three times a day. The piriformis muscle is the most common irritant to the sciatic nerve, as the sciatic nerve is easily irritated when it tightens. To prevent sciatica from occurring, stretching before sleeping is the best way. Patients can stretch their muscles before they sleep so that the benefit of stretching will not disappear.

However, stretching may not be a good idea if the patients do not know how to do it. The best results can come from chiropractic therapy. Chiropractors can massage the muscles and place it in the right position in order to prevent the tightening of the piriformis muscle.

These three approaches to prevent the occurrence of sciatica can be carried out through chiropractic treatment. They are the best means of preventing sciatica and giving relief to the body.

Can your chiropractor keep your brain from shrinking? The Journal of Neuroscience brings sobering news to chronic back pain sufferers. Scientists found that even one year of chronic back pain can age the brain 10 to 20 years. 26 people with chronic, continuous pain of more than a year were compared with 26 healthy people. The researchers theorize that the stress of chronic pain causes “burnout shrinkage.” But that may not be a life sentence.

Brain shrinkage doesn’t always equal loss of brain cells and some shrinkage may reverse once the chronic pain ends. Can chiropractic reverse the damage associated with brain shrinkage? Chiropractic success with chronic conditions is well known to the population. Apparently learning to live with it may cause serious long-term health problems. If you know anyone with chronic back pain, please advise them to explore chiropractic care. Their pain and their brain will thank them.

Most of you know that there can be damaging effects to your brain from electromagnetic radiation, environmental pollution, toxic chemical additives to food and other chemicals added to the things we drink, but did you know that pain can cause your brain to shrink somewhat. I have been contemplating this brain shrinkage phenomenon since I first read about it a while ago. The conclusions I have come up with may astonish a lot of you.

Here they are (keep in mind that I am being sarcastic here to prove a point): 1) Because individuals tend to think that their pain will “eventually go away by itself” (if only I had a dollar for every time I heard this), I suppose that the logic explanation for the reason that the pain eventually goes away is that part of our brain just disappeared. 2) If pain causes our brains to shrink it would probably be a good thing for those of us who are quite knowledgeable on every subject known to mankind (i.e. smarty pants) to be in pain every once in a while in order to give the other individuals around us a chance to keep up with us. 3) It may be beneficial to most of us that we only use a minor percentage of our brain’s capacity to engage in our daily activities (the myth that we use only 10% of our brains is exactly that, a myth). But this could mean that most of us have lots of brains to spare so if we ever get into pain and start to lose our brains, we shouldn’t have much of a problem. 4) Some of us have been told that we have “swollen heads”, pain every once in a while might help our heads to shrink slightly, allowing us more easy passage through doorways and getting in and out of cars, we would also be less of an obstruction for the individuals behind us at the movie theatre. 5) Long-term pain could allow us to have that constant light headed feeling that some long distance runners strive for because our heads would literally be lighter. This would also help our posture because a lighter head would be easier to keep upright. Less forward head leaning with the reduction in weight makes for a better posture.

Well I hope you get the big idea here. The big idea is that having a smaller brain is not a good thing or should I say avoiding pain is a good thing! It’s been found that the best way to avoid pain is to be proactive about your health. When our patients at the chiropractic office in San Diego ask us how often they should come in to get adjusted I recommend at least one time per month to get checked and realigned. All of the chiropractors at New Century Spine Centers personally try to get adjusted once per week and it is believed that it helps prevent a lot of problems with our health that we would have otherwise developed.

So here is my official position on how often you need to be coming in to get adjusted. If you do not have acute pain due to some unfortunate incident you should be coming in once per month. I look forward to seeing you and helping you maintain your hat size for the duration of your life. New Century Spine Centers is located in San Diego in Mission Valley and can be reached at 619-630-9153.

Problems of spinal pain are nothing new to the millions of backside sufferers around the world and they only want some type of relief. Adjustments, physical therapy, medications, thousands of dollars are being spent on pain relief but most people will eventually give in to a surgical process. Regrettably, thousands of back patients will have recurring back pain even if they have had surgery. They are suffering from what is known as failed back surgery syndrome and it is a very real condition.

There are many different things that could contribute to the FBSS, including but not limited to pressure on the spinal nerve in post operative surgical procedure, herniated disc that keeps coming back, mobility in the joints that has been altered, spinal muscular de-conditioning and scar tissue from the operation. People will experience several dissimilar types of pain when they have had an operation. They may find that they are more depressed than normal, have more irritability and be getting less sleep. All of these things and others could be contributing factors to the FBSS and should be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Some individuals may be predisposition to FBSS and their symptoms include diabetes, peripheral blood vessel or vassal disease and many of the autoimmune diseases. Some of the symptoms that could contribute to this phenomenon also known as post-laminectomy syndrome include, but are not limited to are dull and aching pain in the legs and back area, abnormal sensitivity and stabbing pain in the limbs.

There are several treatment options available to FBSS patients to help them stop the pain. Further operations are not always the answer, yet it is not always ruled out as a plan to stop the pain. There is the electrical nerve stimulator which helps to stimulate the nerves in and around the pain location so that they are more ‘active’ and will work to relieve the pain. In addition, medications including mood stabilizers, anti-depressants and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are also tried to help manage the pain.

There are two groups of patients who have undergone one or more operations on their lower spine and continue to report problems. In one group, group A, these people were never indicated to have spinal operations but the pain was so severe, their doctors wanted to give them some type of relief, although it did not happen that way. In group B, these patients had somewhat incomplete surgeries in which the doctors did not find what they were looking for to make the operation a success so they stopped and therefore, did not take away the pain.

Many people are opting out of the operation for spine problems altogether and deciding to go for fusion procedures instead. A lumbar fusion procedure does exactly what it the title says it will do, fuse the discs together so there is no more pain. However, many people continue to experience failed back surgery with this process as well.

Have you heard the term bulging discs? Some call it a herniated disc, which refers to the same condition. It is basically a term that refers to the discs in the spine that for one reason or another become inflamed and bulges out and cause pain.

Many have this problem and have trouble bending over and reaching over their head. But in most cases the problem is not a serious condition. It can be attended to with rest and the use of anti inflammatory medications.

Also, many people find relief after a visit to their chiropractor. Many people become worried or even frightened when they hear that they have a problem with their spine. They start thinking the worse case scenario. They think that they might need surgery or that they might end up paralyzed.

If you rest the area and take care of yourself, there should be no lasting ill effects. Of course you want to keep your back in good shape and have no problems in the first place.

You can injure your back in many ways. But you can cause inflammation in your discs simply by sitting down too long. Many people sit down all day at work. This puts a lot of stress on the spine and the discs. Too much sitting can cause the bulging that leads to inflammation that can lead to pain. The body simply was not made to sit down all day. This is why it is a good idea to take a walk at lunch time or during your break time.

Your chiropractor can suggest stretching exercises that will help the blood circulate in the area of your spine so that the inflammation will be relieved. In fact, in many cases, if you practice the right type of exercise for your back, you might avoid bulging discs altogether.
