Years ago, I was an insurance adjuster. I handled claims for large farm labor companies in California and I was the worker’s compensation adjuster. When people were injured, they heard from me. It is hard to believe that a mattress can be the cause of lower back pain, more specifically what many call morning back pain. The type of pain that is most acute in the morning when we first get out of bed. This is not normal. Sleeping is supposed to be a healing experience. If lower back pain is caused by the march of time and the effects of gravity over our lifetime then it should be most severe at the end of the day not the beginning.

I looked for possible treatments, all of them a little frightening. Spinal decompression, traction, inversion tables and even surgery. Spinal decompression sounded promising and the commercials on TV looked convincing. I found out that such treatments could cost up to $1,000 per month and was not covered by my medical insurance. Now what was I to do? Day after day, month after month, year after year this morning back pain increased until one day I could barely get out of bed.

It was time to take action, to do something, anything. Then I saw an ad on TV about inversion tables. Since they are also a form of decompression therapy, or more correctly traction therapy, I decided to buy one. The cheapest one I could find was only $100. Now in my experience I would not recommend hanging upside down on a regular basis for a solution to back pain. It is not enjoyable to say the least. Your feet and ankles become sore and your blood rushes to your head. But eventually I did get used to hanging upside down.

Finally after about two weeks of using the table I did get some relief from my pain. It seemed to diminish little by little day by day. I would even take my relief for granted and stop using the table only to find the back pain would return. One thing kept bugging me. Why was the pain most acute in the morning? It just did not make any sense, I was finally beginning to believe my mattress was the culprit.

I decided to give my mattress a good inspection. I removed all the blankets and sheets and with a careful eye noticed the mattress did have a slight dip in the middle, a slight bowl-like shape to it. When sleeping on it I am sure the dip in the middle was even more pronounced. Could this have been the cause of my problems all these years. I remember when I was young I could sleep on anything and never did I experience back pain. Maybe now it was time to pay more attention to what I was sleeping on. Time to get a good mattress.

I considered many types of mattresses and beds before finally deciding on a memory foam (MF) bed but the cost was just too high for me. The prices of high quality visco elastic MF mattresses can be thousands of dollars. What if this did not solve my problem? Then I would be out a lot of money. With the Internet at my finger tips I did some research and found I could make my own MF mattress and platform frame and save thousands of dollars. A major cause of back pain is poor posture, caused by weak postural muscles. The postural muscles, which maintain the body’s posture and support the body against gravity are also called tonic muscles. Another kind muscle is a movement muscle or phasic muscle. These muscles move the body. Examples of phasic muscles are the gluteals and abdominals. Postural muscles include the muscles that run down the spine (erector spinae), the muscles that run down the back of the legs (hamstrings) and the chest muscles (pectorals). Postural muscles have great endurance and can support the body’s weight for long periods of time. But if these muscle become tight, posture will deteriorate over time and back pain will arise. Muscles also work together and compensate for each other’s weakness. If the postural muscles are weak or tight, the movement muscles will have to do more work and will tire easily.

Looking at the profile of someone with good posture, we will see an S shape in the back because the spine has a natural S shape. If the hamstring muscles become tight, they will usually pull on the pelvis (as the hamstrings attach to the pelvis), causing a rounding of the lower back. This will result in lower back pain as time goes by. Tight chest muscles will tend to pull on the shoulders, which will round the shoulders and upper back. This will cause upper back pain. The front postural muscles include the pectoral muscles. A simple chest stretch: Stand in front of a door frame. Reach back and hold the door with your right hand. Straighten your right arm and push your chest slightly forwards, being careful not to strain your shoulders. You should feel a stretch in your right chest. Hold for a few seconds. Repeat on the left side.
