Not all treatments for gout are the same, some will work to prevent future outbreaks while others such as Colchicine will only relieve the inflammation that is present now. Not every treatment will be right for everyone, so you may have to go through a couple of different treatments before you find the one that is right for you.

There are two different ways in which this drug can be taken. A person can either choose to take small amounts regularly each month or year. Whilst for others they have found that by taking a much large dose at one time in a very short period of time say several hours have found it to be effective.

What To Eat If You Suffer With Gout

When sufferers of gout start to suffer bad pain from gout attacks, they will normally start to do some research on the subject. Obviously they are looking for ways to stop the attacks from happening and normally they will start to learn that their diet plays a big part in the gout attacks.

The first question that will come from sufferers of gout is “what is the best diet for me then?” and straight away will picture all of their favourite foods. Obviously none of us wish to give up eating our favourite foods but our long term health needs to come first.

The main thing that you think about is how on earth do you stop the pain that gout can cause. There are of course treatments that are able to stop the pain as a short term measure but you really need to think more about how to stop gout problems that may occur in the future. The fact is that gout is unlikely to improve without you taking steps to help yourself.

Unfortunately if you do not start thinking about the long term then the pain that you get from gout will just get worse. Your diet needs to be improved so that you avoid periods in hospital. The pain is caused by a build up of uric acid around the joints, in particular the joint of the big toe. If you do not take steps to control your diet and eat better, then the pain will continue.

You will not be able to cure your gout by simply altering your diet for a while, instead you need to make changes to your diet which are not just for the present. You need to make changes that will have long term positive effects.

Therefore which changes to your lifestyle should you make at the moment to stop another attack of gout? Firstly try and keep a note of all the things you eat and drink over the next two weeks, this will be much easier to do if you carry some kind of note book around in your pocket. By doing this you will be able to see exactly what you are eating rather than guessing. You will be able to see over these two weeks where you need to cut down on certain foods.

Keep away from foods which contain high amounts of purines. The reason for this is that it causes your body to produce uric acid which as we know can crystallize and cause gout. Therefore this is one of the main things you can cut out of your diet.

Keep your diary for a further two weeks and see how many of these foods you have managed to cut out of your diet, as you reduce these foods and increase your intake of water you should see a decrease in your attacks of gout. Signs Of A Gout Attack

The condition known as gout will normally take several years to form before a person starts to suffer from it. This is because the uric acid crystals need time to build up in a person’s joints and the tissue surrounding it before gout symptoms and signs begin to show.

If you have any of the following symptoms then there is a good chance you have gout:-

1. The most common form of gout starts as what is known as podagra usually. This refers to pain in the big toe joint when it is inflamed from the build up of uric acid.

2. Nighttime can often be the first time you notice the intent pain that gout can give you from even the light pressure of a bed sheet.

3. If your toe joint feels like it is on fire and that pain goes on for several hours then the chances are you have gout. The pain should start to disperse over the following 2 days although it can take as long as a week to go totally.

4. When the gout attack actually begins to subside then the person finds that the skin around the joint, which is affected, may feel itchy and starts to peel.

The above are just some of the symptoms that people with gout may have. Not everyone who suffers with the above will have gout and not every gout sufferer will suffer with all (or any) of these symptoms.

While it is usually your big toe joint that suffers the effects of gout , which of course makes walking very painful, you can also get it in any joint in your body. This includes your fingers, elbows, ankles and even your wrists.

Gout can attack after an illness or surgery, to make it even worse it can often be missed and just treated as another ache or pain from the surgery or illness. Older people seem to suffer this misdiagnose more than others.

If you or someone you know starts to have any of the symptoms we have mentioned here it is vital that they go to see a DR. While the initial pain may dissipate after a few days it will come back , and may be much worse the next time, unless they take proper medication.

Diet Changes Can Help Reduce Your Gout Pain

Gout sufferers tend to only think about the disease when they have an attack of pain. They should be thinking about it at every meal, the old saying you are what you eat really is true in relation to your diet and your gout pain

The general consensus is that if your diet is high in purines and protein then you are more likely to suffer with gout. Gout is caused by a build up of uric acid and when purines break down they form uric acid. Along with knowing which foods you should be including in your gout diet it is important to also know the kinds of foods that you should be avoiding. The main foods that one should be avoiding because they contain high levels of both protein and purine are beef, pork, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, cream, eggs and beans. If you can eliminate these from your diet along with many different types of vegetable oils, offal (kidneys and liver) you will find that the chances of your condition becoming worse are greatly reduced.
