What To Look For In A Bellevue Chiropractor

September 1st, 2010 Dr. Michael Weir No comments

When you are looking for a Bellevue Chiropractor it is important to know that every chiropractor has different approaches. This is great because not every one is the same! Here are a few things that you should look for when searching for a chiropractor.

1. Do they have a technique (how they treat you that is best for your body?) Again, remember what I stated above. Not all chiropractors do things the same way and not all ways will work for your individual body. So how do you know? First off if you are queasy AT ALL about the “snap, crackle, pop” that comes from a hands on treatment, then that is not right for you, and you need a more gentle treatment like the Proadjuster or the activator. Next, if you have ever received a “deep tissue” massage and been worse afterward then a heavier chiropractic treatment is not for you.

2. Do they have a way of analyzing your ENTIRE body? Yes, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. It is important to assess you as a whole, because we are one big connected chain. Something in your feet could potentially cause back pain. Something in your shoulders could give you head aches. So, ask if they have a way to assess your feet such as digital scans of the foot, do they have ways to look at your arms and shoulders? Now it may not be necessary to do all of these tests on every person, but it is important that they have the ability to.

3. Ask them how much emphasis they put on their continued learning. Science and research are constantly finding new things that are enhancing our ability to help our patients. If we are not learning about these advances we are not helping our patients. Ask them if they only go to the “required” amount of hours per year, or if they go above and beyond that as this is a sign of being on the cutting edge.

4. Is rehab a part of their patient care? This is vitally important. With out the muscles getting strong, nothing will hold your spine in place. Ask them if they use exercises to help in their patients getting well.

I hope these tips have given you a sense of some of the things you should look for in your Bellevue Chiropractor.

Is Your Job The Cause Of Your Headaches?

August 29th, 2010 Dr. Michael Weir No comments

Being a Bellevue chiropractor, and after seeing thousands of patients over the years, I have begun to see certain patterns in certain groups of patients. For instance, woman who wear high heels for many years have a VERY high likely hood they will have low back pain. Another one is people who have computer jobs all have very similar neck and back problems, and their necks all have a certain look to them. This has become so common in the city that I practice, Bellevue WA, because of the many computer jobs, that I have coined the term “Bellevue Neck”.

So why do these people with computer jobs all have similar looking necks? Sitting at a computer causes the head and neck to tip forward, and then jut forward. If you keep the head and neck in this posture for long enough it will get stuck there. This is a bad thing.

My post doctorate study’s are in chiropractic neurology through the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies. In neurological text we call this bending “plasticity”. Now the good news is that “plasticity” goes both ways. In the negative, getting stuck out of position. In the positive, being able to make changes back to the correct position.

When I see postures of the neck where is jutting out in front of the body or where the shoulders are rolled forward, I diagnose this as “Bellevue Neck”. What this neck straightening does is put tension on the spinal cord, and stress on the whole body.

Just this week I had 4 people come to see me with the effects of Bellevue neck. One was having headaches, two were having middle back pain, and the fourth was having pain in her jaw. As a Bellevue chiropractor I assess if you are a candidate for chiropractic care and help reverse the damage that a strait neck has done to your body.

How To Solve Back Pain

August 20th, 2010 Ron Valdivia No comments

Dr. Erik Roach is one of most professional chiropractors in Central Florida and serves clients in the Winter Park, Altamonte Springs, Maitland, Apopka and Orlando,Fl locations. One of the greatest issues that folks come to him for is back ache. We all go through back pain in some way or another but it’s incredible regarding all the myths which are out there to help heal the particular discomfort. Dr. Erik Roach has had the time to write down and give you a solution to briefly relieve your own lower back pain safely and swiftly. There is no need to purchase anything as everything can be achieved in your own home.

Half of the employed U.S. People in America will experience lumbar pain into their everyday life. A few do nothing which in turn becomes even worse as a body ages and some take action to prevent long term issues. It is easy to quickly suffer from low back pain simply by twisting your back the wrong way as you extend down to pick an object up and you can create lower back pain from merely slouching your own back you sit in front of your computer. As a Winter Park Chiropractic office it is my pleasure to give you this Free advice.

So how do you easily relieve the soreness you feel any time something like this happens. Well think of the position you should have when sitting in a couch. Feet usually are flat plus your back is propped straight up, right? Well that’s the position you will need to put yourself in right away but, you must get in that type of position with your back on the floor. That is correct, you must be lying down so your back is flat and you also will need place some thing beneath your legs to they’re propped upwards. Make sure to visualize your self sitting down, so your hip and legs must imitate that position. I’d personally propose possibly putting several bedroom pillows or even a box that you can put your legs over.

Keep this good posture for approximately 15 minutes. You soon discover the pain is quickly going away. Is this a permanent fix? Absolutely no, it isn’t yet it will take the pain away easily but only temporarily. This works because you’re taking the strain of particular discs and stress points. You are additionally taking weight off of your muscles that may be putting pressure on certain types of bones. Once the 20 minutes are up, then place your legs on the floor so you are laying flat on the floor. Stay that way for five minutes. Depending on the way you feel you may want to continue this kind of exercise on and off until you feel ready to stand up.

It is necessary that you just go to a chiropractic specialist soon after experiencing one of these attacks. A chiropractor can figure out where the ache is located and can figure out what to do to improve the soar area. As a Winter Park Chiropractor I deal with a lot of people which appear to delay until issues become worse for them. Please do yourself a favor and go see a chiropractic practitioner immediately. If you are suffering from some sort of physical discomfort that means your body is trying to tell you that something is not right and needs help.

We are also a Maitland Chiropractic health care center and treat all sorts of patients and all types of insurances are accepted.

What Is Structural Integration And Rolfing?

August 18th, 2010 Judah Lyons No comments

The term Rolfing and Rolfer oftentimes conjures up the image of a painful massage therapy session. Oh, there can be intense sensations as fascia releases, but the intense sensation/pain should always be brief. Rolfers should always be aware of their client’s level of comfort and needs.

Oftentimes patients are willing to deal with some pain, especially if the session was successful in alleviating the painful condition that brought them to me. My Rolfing technique is more gentle than others, as I believe I can apply the technique a few extra times or longer to get the same results by allowing the body to adapt to the pressure. In reality, it is my opinion that all we are really doing is mirroring for the bodies own homeostatic response. Let me take you in for a deeper look into the world of Rolfing.

The imbalance, caused by force vectors that have entered our geodesic dome like structures that we call a human body, can create changes at the fascial and emotional levels of our being according to Dr. Rolf. These muscles, tendons, bones and ligaments all react to these forces that are inherent in gravity. Rolfers have been trained in the nuances of structural integrity and are able to create balance in bodies that have become imbalanced in gravity, through skillful application of touch.

Linking all internal structures within the human frame is the fascial web. This plastic connective tissue creates the structure that you see. Fascia also envelopes and unites the structure of all the inner organs. Since fascia is malleable, it is constantly changing and adapting to external responses that are having an impact on our systems. Sometimes the forces that have been entered the system can cause adaptions that create imbalances and pain.

Rolfing, although a form of massage therapy, doesn’t in any way shape or form resemble classic Swedish massage. The strokes are much slower, often times not even moving, while the Rolfing practitioner waits for the fascia to release and lengthen.
Fascia is an organ of form and through deliberate and focused application with passive and active movement of the client’s body during the application with an accurate tool (hand, fingers, elbow, ulna bone etc) painful conditions often disappear as the body takes on a more upright postural attitude. Through the Rolfing technique the elasticity and sliding capacity of the issue can be restored and the body realigned to become more fluid and pain free. Through educating our clients to use certain movement tools, the conscious effort on the client’s part can often create changes that last a lifetime!

Rolfing is a chemical free, tactile approach to the management of pain and performance. Athletes always appreciate and our aware of the slightest change in function and balance when it comes to performing at the highest levels. Rolfing has been used successfully for over 50 years not only for preventing the outset of painful injuries, but as a performance enhancement manual therapy. I highly encourage you to include Rolfing as an addition to your wellness regime.

Neck Pain Go Away

Days, week, months, and even years go by without a thought to our posture. This lack of self observation can create pain and discomfort that sneaks up on us without us even noticing the cause.

When we go about our routines, whether at home or at work, the first postural issue to occur is frequently the forward head position. This position happens because we always extend our heads forwards off the neutral position over our neck and between our shoulders. When our head is extended out off of our supporting vertebrae, the muscles in the neck and shoulders must work extra hard to keep it in position. This unusual load on these muscles creates tension, stress, and pain over time.

This situation does have a solution, so read on.

To address this issue, understanding, education, and evaluation are important. If you discover that your posture might be the culprit of some of your issues a chiropractor may be able to help you. The chiropractor can promptly identify some of your problems and may even save you time and money.

You can complete a quick posture check on yourself using a wall. Stand approximately 6 inches from the wall and back up, noting which body part touches the wall first. Ideally your head, shoulders, derriere and heels touch at the same time, if they do not you could profit from some straightforward stretching and strengthening!

If your check showed that your shoulders did not touch first, some loosening of your chest or pectoral muscles might help this rounded and slouched posture. Again, this can be performed almost anywhere in your home. Stand in your chosen doorway, stretch your right arm out so that the doorframe is touching your elbow joint, slowly step forward until you notice a stretch across your chest, hold for a few seconds. Repeat with your other arm. This stretch will open your chest and should result in less slouching and slumping of your shoulders.

Or if your head did not reach the wall first, you can address the muscles in the front portion of your neck and strengthen the muscles in the back of your neck with the chin tuck. While sitting or standing straight up, use your neck to pull your chin straight back. Hold for 5-15 seconds and return to the initial position.

The above stretch and strengthening exercise may be all you need to address you alignment issues and can decrease you pain.

The two step process involves evaluation and treatment. The first step was the evaluation by the chiropractor, the second is performing the exercises that he or she suggests. Generally, exercises will be good enough to realign your posture. However, longer term postural problems may require a more intensive treatment plan. This treatment plan may include the inclusion of some well documented techniques that assist with scar tissue removal from within the muscles. These techniques include Active Release and Gaston scar removal techniques.

Even if you do pass the posture evaluation, and do the stretches, chiropractic evaluation is still a good idea because otherproblems that involve abnormal spinal alignment could be present making it harder for your muscles to keep the correct posture.

Luckily you are not alone when it comes to assessing and rectifying your postural problems, because involvement with a chiropractor can lead you down the path to pain free days.

Optimal Health Begins With A Spine That Is Aligned

You may have read about chiropractic care, but remain slightly uncertain about the benefits from the treatment programs. What specifically is the big deal with chiropractic care and why is it so important? Check out this article to find out!

Chiropractic Care Unwrapped

To completely understand the dangers involved with spinal misalignment, it is essential to first understand the basic value of chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is a system of regular adjustments that corrects misalignments of the vertebrae in the spine. The theory behind chiropractic care says that these misalignments cause all of the dis-ease and irritation that we suffer in our bodies, which will result in disease and further pain if left untreated.

There are three major sources of spinal misalignments:

(1) Trauma or physical stresses placed on the body as a result of exercise, work, car collisions, etc.

(2) Stress stemming from daily life including work, family, social demands, spiritual concerns, etc.

(3) Chemicals that we put into our bodies in the form of food, prescription or illegal drugs, diet ingredients (i.e. aspartame), etc.

You might be curious if these three sources are truly the reason for all malfunction in the body, causing illness? You are not alone! Dr. Henry Windsor dealt with similar doubts and as a result, carried out a study of the body to find out if these three factors were in fact the consequence of infection in the body.

A Revealing Case Study

To dispel his doubts, Dr. Windsor, a physician from the University of Pennsylvania, studied fifty cadavers from the pathology department to find unhealthy organs. In those fifty cadavers, Dr. Windsor discovered 139 diseased organs, such as hearts, livers and gall bladders, in various levels of disease. Next, Dr. Windsor examined the nerves linking the unhealthy organs with the vertebrae of the spine.

The discovery by Dr. Windsor was tremendous! In each of the cadavers, there was a misalignment of the curvature in the spine, which was directly connected to the nerves leading to the diseased organs.

In essence, this is what takes place in the body:

(1) The spinal bones shift and move out of place, causing the spine to become misaligned

(2) This causes nerve irritation

(3) The nerve irritation causes decreased blood flow to the organs

(4) The reduced blood flow brings about disease in the internal organs

Why Receive Regular Treatments?

Not only is there a direct link between vertebral misalignment and disease of the organs, but the illness seems to come before old age and even to produce it! Initially the spinal cord becomes rigid, reducing the blood flow to the vital organs, and the feelings of old age in the body follow.

Consider this: we visit the dentist at least twice a year, but a mere seven percent of the population goes to the chiropractor on a regular basis.

Since your spine is such a vital part of maintaining your health and longevity, make sure to schedule a visit to see your chiropractor!

Reishi Extract And Inflammation

June 13th, 2010 Dr. Markho Rafael No comments

Reishi extract has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat arthritis and other forms of inflammation for over 2,000 years. Also commonly known by its Latin name as “Ganoderma,” or Chinese “Ling Zhi,” Reishi is by far the most searched medicinal mushroom on the Internet with over 200,000 searches per month. And although it may not be the panacea (”cure-all”) that some hold it to be, the fact that modern research confirms it as an inflammation modulator may help explain why it has long been heralded as such in the Orient.

In fact, Chinese medical practitioners have been prescribing Reishi extract for ages in cases of arthritis, bronchitis and other conditions involving any type of inflammation. Modern research in Asia as well as in America and Europe confirm the validity of these uses. Out of 19 papers used for this article, 17 reported positive results in the use or Reishi extract for arthritis. Only two were studies were inconclusive, both of which were conducted by the same research team. (1,2)

An American study conducted in 1993 by Lin et al. concluded that a water extract of Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) demonstrated “significant anti-inflammatory activity.” (4) A study out of India ten years later found that an extract of Reishi decreased inflammation in conditions of acute edema and chronic edema by 56% and 60%. (3) Seven additional research papers were found during the writing of this article that all concluded that Reishi is a potent anti-inflammatory medicinal mushroom. (5,6,7,8,9,10,11)

Next we’ll be looking at some studies that more directly relate to the use of Reishi extract with arthritis. A paper published in 2006 by Blum et al. claimed to provide supporting clinical evidence demonstrating that use of Reishi extract for joint health was both safe and effective. (12)

Also that same year, a Chinese study by Xi Bao et al. came to the conclusion that Reishi plus another medicinal herbal remedy commonly used in China seemed to have a “beneficial immunomodulatory effect” on arthritis. (13)

The mechanism through which Reishi achieves this beneficial effect on arthritis was suggested in a study the following year, 2007, by Ho et al., which states that GL-PP [Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide peptide] significantly inhibited the proliferation of RASF [Rheumatoid Arthritis Synovial Fibroblasts] (14)

Five additional studies are included in the references that report positive findings between Reishi and arthritis. (15,16,17) One goes so far as to state that Reishi shows favorable results when compared to prednisone, and is free from the side effects. (18) In extension of this, a separate study also found that not only was Reishi extract free of the side effects of prednisone, it could also help balance the existing side effects of prednisolone* such as cell toxicity and proteinuria. (*Prednisolone is the active compound of prednisone. The liver breaks down prednisone and converts it to prednisolone.) (19)

In conclusion, the majority of research on the use of Reishi extract for inflammation or arthritis appears to support its effectiveness. Please remember that it is very important to always consult a licensed medical doctor before using any herb for medicinal purposes.

Note on name confusion: The name “Reishi” is Japanese for the perennial tree mushroom that American naturalists refer to as “Varnished Conk.” In China, it is known as “Ling Zhi.” All these names usually refer to the species Ganoderma lucidum, which for the sake of distinction from other types of Reishi may sometimes be called “Common Reishi” or “Red Reishi.”

Several closely related species of Ganoderma also go by the name of “Reishi”. Most common of these are the Hemlock Reishi (Ganoderma tsugae) found on Hemlocks in the Appalachian Mountains, and the Chinese species “Black Reishi” (Ganoderma sinense). Less common are Ganoderma resinaceum (sometimes called “Red Reishi,” although that name is more often used for G. lucidum), Ganoderma neo-japonicum (no common name other than “Reishi”), and Ganoderma japonicum (Purple Reishi).

All Natural Pain Relief – A Solution At Your Fingertips

May 21st, 2010 Laura Whitelaw No comments

You’ve probably seen many television ads promoting the latest and greatest medications that suggest you talk to your doctor about a prescription. By law, the ads are required to inform you of possible side effects and often you are informed of some scary ones that make the idea of taking such a drug very unappealing. Well, you’re not alone. Many people are searching for natural alternative treatments because sometimes the risks associated with taking prescribed medications are just too great. All natural pain relief is one such alternative that people are looking for.

Many people seek out the help of registered professionals like chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists to help them manage their pain. There is a bigger time commitment to be sure but you are more likely to experience a full recovery rather than just temporary relief until you pop the next pill. The professional you see will depend on the type of pain you’re experiencing. If your pain has been brought on as a result of an accident (for example), you’re probably better off seeing a physiotherapist who can help you strenghthen the muscles again to support that part of your body that’s hurting. If your pain is the result of repetitive tasks from work, then you’ll probably want to see a chiropractor or massage therapist on a regular basis to maintain your health.

However, if you’re seeking an all natural pain relief method that you can use any time and gain relief from headaches, backaches and the like, you may want to explore the world of energy therapies.

One of the most well known of these energy therapies is Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT. It involves focusing on a problem and gently tapping or massaging and various accupressure points on the face and body. This method works by straightening out the energetic blockages that are the result of physical and or emotional stress.

EFT was developed in the early 1990’s by a Stamford engineer named Gary Craig. The method has proven to be effective at curing all sorts of common problems including weight loss, phobias, addictions and more. One of Gary’s best students was Dr. Carol Look. She has recently developed a program specifically for all natural pain relief that uses EFT.
